Blues visit Los Angeles

10/07/2006 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A pair of teams trying for their first wins of the season get together tonight in Los Angeles, as the Kings battle the St. Louis Blues at Staples Center.

The Blues began the season Thursday in San Jose and were dealt an overtime loss. Curtis Brown scored the winning goal 2:12 into the extra session in a 5-4 victory for the Sharks.

Bill Guerin scored the tying goal with 5.6 seconds left in the third period for the Blues. Manny Legace stopped 29-of-34 shots for St. Louis.

St. Louis tied it in the waning seconds of regulation with Legace out of the net. Keith Tkachuk had the puck at the left of the net and flipped it off Vesa Sharks goaltender Toskala and into the crease where Guerin deflected it into the net.

The Kings, meanwhile, were handed a setback in Anaheim to begin the season on Friday. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 41 shots and Chris Kunitz had a goal and an assist as the Ducks defeated LA, 4-3, at the Honda Center.

Anze Kopitar scored his first two NHL goals and Lubomir Visnovsky added a goal for the Kings, who are now 16-14-9 in season openers. Dan Cloutier stopped 28 shots.

Los Angeles has missed the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. In April former Sharks general manager Dean Lombardi took over the duties and hired Marc Crawford to man his bench. On draft day, he pulled the trigger on a deal that sent Pavol Demitra to Minnesota for prospect Patrick O'Sullivan.

Lombardi also obtained goaltender Dan Cloutier from the Canucks, inked Rob Blake and brought in both Scott Thornton and Alyn McCauley, both of whom were with him in San Jose.

The Kings dominated the series with St. Louis last season, winning all four of the meetings.
