Indians, Royals resume basement battle

Baseball Betting Lines

08/18/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The basement battle in the AL Central between the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals will continue tonight in the second installment of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

Kansas City was able to pull a game ahead of cellar-dwelling Cleveland with last night's 2-1 win in the series opener. Wilson Betemit made it all possible with the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, while Yuniesky Betancourt also went deep for the Royals, winners of two straight and three of four games.

Zack Greinke was able to pick up his eighth win of the season (8-11) by holding the Tribe to one run and five hits in six innings. Jesse Chavez, Blake Wood and All-Star closer Joakim Soria each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, with Soria locking down his 34th save of the season.

"I always tell him how bad he is," Greinke said of how he ribs Soria. "How he's not good enough to be a starter and stuff like that, then he doesn't throw hard. He signed a bad contract. I never give him credit for anything."

Bruce Chen doesn't throw that hard either, but he'll make his 15th start for the Royals Wednesday night. Chen is only 2-4 in his last six decisions and lost his most recent outing on Thursday in a 4-3 decision versus the New York Yankees. Chen yielded three runs and eight hits in five innings, falling to 7-6 with a 4.50 earned run average in 24 games (14 starts) this season.

The left-hander is 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA in six career matchups, two of which have been starts, with the Indians.

Cleveland has lost seven of nine games and wasted a solid start from Jeanmar Gomez, who threw six innings of two-run ball and scattered seven hits.

Travis Hafner had a team-best two hits and Matt LaPorta was credited with the lone RBI for the Indians.

"No one wants to finish last," Indians manager Manny Acta said before the game on the team's site. "They don't, and we don't."

Acta's ballclub unfortunately took over sole possession of last place in the Central standings and will hand the ball to Fausto Carmona Wednesday. Carmona has dropped back-to-back starts and three of his last four outings since a personal three-start winning streak.

Carmona took the loss in Friday's 3-2 setback versus Seattle, as he gave up three runs -- two earned -- and nine hits in six frames. The righty is 11-10 in 24 starts to go along with a 3.87 ERA this season, and will face Kansas City for the 13th time in his career. In 12 games (10 starts) against the Royals, Carmona is 5-2 with a subpar 4.36.

Cleveland took two of three meetings from the Royals at Kauffman Stadium earlier in the season, but the Royals responded with a sweep of a two-game set from May 19-20.

MySportsbook.com week 1 NFL lines

Now that the 2008 NFL schedule is finally out, it is only matter-of-course for lines on “Week 1” to follow.  Of course MySportsbook.com is the first to churn out odds for the NFL’s inaugural week for the upcoming season.   Expect a lot of fireworks the first Thursday night of the season as the defending champion Indianapolis Colts face off against the surprise of the 2008 season, the New Orleans Saints.  These teams were ranked #1 and #3 in the NFL respectively a season ago so a high scoring affair could be in order.  As of now, the Colts will be giving 6 points to the Saints; keep in mind the Saints were one of the better road teams last season going 6-3 SU and 7-2 ATS.  The first Monday night of the season will again provide a “double feature”. Coming off a disappointing season, the Cincinnati Bengals will look to get back to playoffs and improve their public image as they take on the AFC North favorite Baltimore Ravens.  The second game features a couple of teams that haven’t had too much success recently but each could make some noise if the NFC is as weak as it was last year as the San Francisco 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals. The most interesting game of the opening week will feature the NFC champion Bears as they hit the road to take on the NFL’s top team during last year’s regular season, the San Diego Chargers.
